Arei Stokes

By Kyle Gylsen - Bertha

The SportsCow.com Female Athlete of the Week is Arei Stokes of the Bertha-Hewitt girls' basketball team.

On December 13, Stokes scored 32 points against Ashby to reach exactly 1,000 points in her high school career.  She also pulled down 19 rebounds in that contest.

She became just the fifth player in Bears' girls' basketball history to reach that milestone.  Arei joins her sister Kendra, who reached the mark in February 2010; Jamie Dettwiler (Arei's aunt), Kayla Finck and Jessica Finck as girls who went over 1,000 points in their Bertha-Hewitt careers.

Through the first 10 games of the season, Stokes is averaging 20.7 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.  She also leads the Bears with 42 steals and 13 blocked shots and is tied for the team lead with 16 assists.

"Arei is a fun player to coach because she can play both a guard or a post position," commented Bertha-Hewitt head coach Rick Harig.  "She practices like she plays, extremely hard, and it has made her a better basketball player.

"This year she has done a good job of getting her teammates involved in the game. She understands the game and also understands that without her teammates it is easy to shut her down.

"It has been a pleasure to watch Arei's game improve from 7th grade on and I am glad we have her for another season and two-thirds."

Stokes, a 5'11" junior, is the daughter of Michael "Mick" and Sheila Stokes.

As always, we also like to ask our AOTWs a few questions about their likes/dislikes, etc. Nothing too personal...just a fun way to get to know the athletes a little bit better.
