Matthew Frethem (Updated)

By Kyle Gylsen - Bertha

The Male Athlete of the Week is Matthew Frethem of the Bertha-Hewitt boys' basketball team.
Frethem scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a game against the Sebeka Trojans Friday night. With 6:28 remaining in the game, he hit 1,000 career points by penetrating between two Sebeka defenders for an open basket in front of the rim.
"Matt has averaged 19.5 points for us the past two seasons and we expect a lot from him," said Bears' head coach Dale Finck.  "He has an amazing ability to finish at the rim.  We don't recommend shots that Matt takes to anyone else in the gym, he just can finish at the rim.  I've seen him make shots that you can only sit back, smile, and as a coach be thankful he is on your side.  He has expanded his game by becoming a threat from the outside and when your shooting above 50 percent, it is difficult to defend a player like Matt."
Last season, Frethem scored 508 points, which is third all-time on the Bears' list for points in a season.  He is also eighth all-time in scoring average for a season at 19.5 points per game.
Matthew becomes the fifth Bertha-Hewitt boys' player to reach the 1,000-point milestone, joining Ryan Denny ('09), Kenny Dittberner ('68), Ken Kendall ('90), Paul King ('88) and Tim Hallstrom ('81).
Finck also believes that some people may not realize what an outstanding rebounder Frethem is.
"He and comes up with rebounds that most players couldn't get," Finck elaborated.  "I've been in the gym for most of my life watching Bears' basketball.  Kevin Uselman was awesome watching rebound because everyone moved out of his way when he went up to get a board.  No one was going to take it away.  Kenny Kendall would never give up on a rebound, especially offensive boards, and was such a quick jumper that made him great.
"Matt has both those qualities.  I don't feel like Matt is a great jumper, but he is quick and he plays extremely strong which get him rebounds most couldn't come up with.  Matt is also great at tipping the ball to himself.  He looks like he is boxed out and he gets a hand on it and all of sudden it becomes his ball."
Frethem is currently averaging 12.5 rebounds per game this season.
"Matt works extremely hard to keep his teammates involved and making sure they have fun," Finck added.  "He is averaging 3.5 assists per game as well.  He can turn the switch on and off which makes him fun to be around.  I believe Matt has one of those personalities that everyone enjoys being around.  His teammates, friends and adults all enjoy spending time around Matt because he is positive, friendly and sincere."
We asked Matthew to fill out our AOTW questionnaire, so that we could get to know him a little bit better.  Here are his anwers:
