Emily Miron

By Kyle Gylsen

Emily Miron (center) poses with her mom and dad after scoring the 1,000th point of her career earlier this season. For her accomplishment, Miron has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.

The Female Athlete of the Week is Emily Miron of the Wadena-Deer Creek girls' basketball team.
Miron scored 26 points, surpassing the 1,000-point mark for her career, as the Wolverines defeated the Park Rapids Area Panthers 57-19 in a Mid-State Conference game Thursday, February 23.

Miron hit a three-pointer to surpass the 1,000 mark with 13:13 remaining in the game.
"Emily is known for what she can do down in the paint, but can hit the outside jumper and take it hard to the hoop," stated Wolverines' head coach Keith Ferris.
Miron joins Courtney Volkmann, Rhonda Birch, Kerby Johnson, Marissa Browne and Lynn Piepkorn on W-DCís 1,000-career points list.
As of the end of the regular season, Miron had 527 points, giving her a total of 1,041 for her career.
The junior has improved steadily with her experience.  This season Emily is leading the Wolverines with an average of 20.3 points per game.  As a sophomore she averaged 12.9 points per game and averaged 8.5 per game as a freshman.
"As a basketball player, her size and quickness gives many opposing team difficulty," Ferris explained. "She has a knack of knowing how to get the ball to the hoop. There have been many times where I donít know how she made the shot, but she is able to get them to fall."
Through 26 games this season, Miron is also leading W-DC in rebounds (11.0/game), blocks (6.0/game), assists (3.9/game) and steals (3.4) game.
"Emily is a very special player," Ferris added.  "She is a true athlete."
Once again, we asked our AOTW to fill out a questionnaire about some of her likes/dislikes, etc.  It should be pointed out that Emily's answers come from back in December when we had considered her for AOTW after she scored 46 points in a game against Menahga.  We asked if she wanted to "update" some of her choices, but because the Wolverines were getting ready to begin post-season play, she has not had time to reply.  So we'll go with what we have and you can always ask Emily if she still feels the same way about her answers the next time you see her.
