By Kyle Gylsen - Verndale
The SportsCow.com Female Athlete of the Week is Teresa Moenkedick of the Verndale Pirates' girls' basketball team.
Moenkedick became just the second girl to reach the 1,000 point milestone in Verndale school history when she scored 29 points in a 71-43 victory over Eagle Valley in the first round of the Section 5A girls' basketball tournament on Monday, February 27.
Teresa joins Raya Kern as the only two Lady Pirates to reach that mark in their careers.
The 29 points she scored Monday put her right at 1,000 points.
"We did not tell her that she had a chance to get to 1,000 if she had a big scoring night," explained Lady Pirates' head coach Art Schluttner. "When she had 21 at halftime, we knew she was going to make it. At the half, we told the officials, the Eagle Valley coach and her parents, but not her or anyone on the team. When she made the last shot and the game stopped, she had no idea what was going on. It took her a few moments to realize what she had done.
"We took her out of the game right after she reached 1000. There was about eight minutes left in the game, but we had a big lead and took the starters out."
After the game her teammates, schoolmates, family and fans helped her celebrate the accomplishment.
Including the Eagle Valley game, Moenkedick now has 566 points this season. She is averaging 22.6 points per game. Teresa was making 51% of her two-point attempts and was shooting 34% from outside the arc. She is also averaging 4.5 assists, 5 steals and 4.5 rebounds per game.
"Teresa is a coach’s dream," Schluttner stated. "(She's) an extremely talented player who works hard every day to make herself and her teammates better. There is no one on the team or in the school that has a bad thing to say about Teresa, which makes this accomplishment even better...good things happening to a good person. Teresa is only a junior and will continue to add to her point total for another year. She is also one of the captains on this year’s team and along with our senior captain, have done a wonderful job of leadership for our very young team. W have only one senior and one junior on this year’s team, along with two sophomors, two freshman, three eighth-graders and a seventh-grader."
