Teresa Moenkedick

By Kyle Gylsen - Verndale

The SportsCow.com Female Athlete of the Week is Teresa Moenkedick of the Verndale girls' basketball team.

Moenkedick helped lead the Pirates to their first-ever Park Region Conference championship and, along the way, set the all-time school scoring mark for Verndale basketball.

Moenkedick, who already held the girls' scoring mark, scored 28 points against New York Mills on February 19, giving her 1,512 points in her career. The old boys' record of 1,492 was held by Dick Finck, who graduated in 1969.

"I have been fortunate enough to have coached Teresa since elementary, my daughter and her where on the same team," said Pirates' girls' coach Art Schluttner.  "It has been great to see her grow as a player and a person. Teresa is a very humble and modest person.  She does not like to be in the 'lime light' at all.  It was important for her to break the school scoring record, but she was fine if no one else knew. Teresa is always about the team and what is best for the team. Personal recognition is not important to her.

"She has been a tremendous leader for this year's team.  As the only senior, she has done a great job guiding the younger players.  She has been a starter for Verndale since she was a ninth grader and went through some pretty tough years, being the youngest starter and not winning a lot of games. The last two season she has been one of the older girls and been able to play on some successful teams. She is certainly one of the main reason we were able to win the conference this year. Teresa is the type of player/person everyone is happy to see have success. She will be missed tremendously next season both on and off the court."
