Rachel King and Lindsay Finnerty both scored twice and had two assists to lead North Wright County to a 5-2 victory over Brainerd/Little Falls Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.
North Wright County is made up of skaters from Annandale, Monticello and St. Michael-Albertville. The Brainerd/Little Falls girls’ hockey coop also includes Pillager.
King’s goals gave the River Hawks a 2-0 lead. Ally Smith, assisted by Mara Roberts, cut the lead in half when she scored with less than two minutes remaining in the first period.
After a scoreless second, Maddie Ellingson’s tally just 2:43 into the third period tied the score at 2-2. Ellie Ritters earned the assist on the goal.
NWC then scored three times to pull away for the win.
Olivia King, an eighth-grader, started in the net for the Flying Warriors goalie and made 27 saves.
Julia Bogenholm stopped all 11 of the shots that she faced to earn the shutout for the River Hawks.
