Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale played error-free ball in its season opener with Pillager Tuesday afternoon. The Raiders defeated the Huskies 6-1 in the Park Region Conference contest.
The Huskies got the first run of the game and season in the top of the first, but the Raiders answered with four runs in the home half of the inning. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale added single runs in the second and fifth innings.
Sophomore Jordan Carr allowed just the one earned run, while scattering six hits to earn the complete game victory. Carr struck out four and walked only one.
Junior Sarah Moenkedick and senior Kylee Wright led the BH-V offense with two hits apiece. One of Moenkedick's hits was a triple, while senior Hannah VanHale and junior Michaela Powers stroked doubles for the Raiders.
Lacy Hiltner started and took the loss for Pillager. Hiltner gave up all six runs (three earned) in a little more than four innings of work. Abby Brooks pitched 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
