According to the Bemidji Pioneer, the Laporte nine-man team has decided it didn’t have the numbers to be competitive in a varsity schedule and are dropping back to JV.
The Wildcats lost to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 71-0 in Week One of the season, playing most of the game with just nine players after an injury. It was a tough way to play after the Wildcats made the long (three and a half hours, one-way) trip from Laporte to Hector.
Another injury thinned the team down to eight players, forcing them to cancel their week two matchup against Wheaton/Herman-Norcross, and ultimately the rest of their season.
“You’re either in or out, so we had to drop out of the varsity schedule,” head coach Mike Olson said. “Now the athletic director is putting together a JV schedule.”
Olson hopes to gather up enough players for a varsity schedule next season.
“We’ll try again next year,” he said. “We have to start by getting more (players). Really to be functional, you have to have 15 to 18 kids to even think about it. You can’t do it with 11.”
