Heidi Olson (Sebeka Volleyball)

By Kyle Gylsen - Sebeka

Heidi Olson, a member of the Sebeka volleyball team, is the Female Athlete of the Week.

Olson made school history on Monday, September 14 when she recorded her 1,000th kill in a match against Perham.

She becomes just the second Lady Trojan to have 1,000 kills in her career, but she also becomes the first Sebeka volleyball player ever to have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in school history.

“Heidi has played on the varsity team since 8th grade and has started since 9th,” said Sebeka head coach Becca Pulju. “She is so fun to coach, because she has an intense passion for the game and it is contagious. She is a good teammate and pushes those around her. She has a ton of fun playing the game, which makes it even more enjoyable.

”1,000 digs and 1,000 kills is impressive,” Pulju stated, “But I know she would trade it for a state tournament trip…which is our goal!”

According to Pulju, Olson plays bigger than her size.

“She is not even 5'7", but she is strong. That is probably from wrestling with her twin brother her whole life or all the farm chores!”

Her coach also appreciates that Olson plays well both offensively and defensively.

“Heidi sees the court better than any player I have ever coached,” Pulju said. “Offensively, she reads the block and defense extremely well and finds the hole when she needs to, but can also put it away. Defensively she is a rock star! I believe it comes from just knowing the game and being around it…all three older sisters played for me…as well as pure athleticism. She gets a hand on nearly any ball within 10 feet of her.

”I am truly going to miss her. It has been such a pleasure to coach her and this team."

As always, we asked Heidi to fill out the Athlete of the Week questionnaire. Here are her responses to the queries we had for her…
