The SportsCow.com Female Athlete of the Week is Lydia Irons of the New York Mills volleyball team.
Irons recorded the 2,000th set assist of her high school career on Saturday, Septeber 26. The milestone came while the Eagles were playing Brandon-Evansville during the Parkers Prairie tournament.
On her second set of the morning, teammate Marcie Peeters recorded a kill, with Irons getting the assist.
Irons has been the New York Mills set assist record holder ever since she broke the old mark of 1,016 set by Lexie Rankka, who graduated in 2013. Lydia has been setting since her freshman season in the fall of 2012.
“As a player she hustles and works hard every minute and is a serious player,” said Eagles’ head coach Angie Paavola. “She can be hard on herself and just wants the best from herself and from her teammates.
“She is a good teammate, very supportive and encouraging. She’s excellent role model on the game court, on the practice court and in the classroom. She was recently chosen as homecoming queen and she has a 3.9 GPA.
Irons also serves as Paavola’s peer tutor.
“Every day she comes to my 4th grade classroom and helps my class with math,” Paavola explained. “She dives right in and helps them, teaches them and has already made connections with them. They are so excited to see her everyday and they have enjoyed celebrating all the volleyball things with her.”
In hopes of getting to know her a little better, we asked Lydia to fill out of AOTW questionnaire…
