Pirates Top Tigers For Section 5A Championship

By Kyle Gylsen - Pierz

The Verndale Pirates are the 2015 Section 5A Volleyball champions, following their 3-0 victory over Nevis Saturday night in Pierz.

The section title in volleyball is a first in school history and means the Pirates will also make their first-ever appearance in the state volleyball tournament, which begins Thursday in St. Paul.

On Saturday night, Verndale won three hard-fought sets against the scrappy Tigers.  Set scores were 25-23, 25-22 and 30-28.

Shania Glenz posted 23 kills, 2 blocks and 5 digs.  Jordyn Glenz added 16 kills, 9 digs and 2 blocks.  Morgan Glenz contributed 7 digs, 4 kills and 1 block.  Haley Stinar had 16 set assists, 8 digs and 3 kills.  Sarah Moenkedick led the Pirates with 17 digs and Megan Dougherty had a team-high 21 assists.

Individual stats for the Tigers were not immediately available.  Please check back for updates.

Verndale received the #5 seed in the Class A State Volleyball Tournament and will face #4 Heritage Christian Academy (Maple Grove) in the quarterfinals at 1:00 p.m. Thursday.

The Eagles (26-10) are the Section 4A champions and were ranked #4 in the final Class A coaches’ poll.
