John Towner, a 6'11" junior, scored a game-high 22 points to lead Long Prairie-Grey Eagle to a 67-53 non-conference victory over Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday night in Long Prairie.
"We did a great job of not giving up tonight," said Wolverines' head coach Kevin Tumberg. "LP-GE is a tough team and with a 6'11" kid in the middle of their defense and offense, it makes things difficult."
The Thunder led by nine points (29-20) at the half and then outscored W-DC 38-33 in the second half.
"There were times in the second half where we were trailing by almost 20 points and we could have easily put our heads down and folded it in at that point," Tumberg explained. "But we kept working hard and had opportunities to cut the lead to single digits towards the end of the game."
Luke Gustafson scored 19 and Blake Fossland added 13 for Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
Wadena-Deer Creek was led by junior Dakota Mittag's 11 points. Seniors Wyatt Fitzsimmons and Tanner Horn added eight apiece.
The Wolverines struggled from the field, shooting 39 percent (20-52) overall, but were just 4-of-23 (17%) from three-point range.
Fitzsimmsons also had seven rebounds, while fellow senior Alex Redfield grabbed six. Junior Konnor Stueve had a team-high five steals.
"I have now seen how our kids bounce back after a win," Tumberg stated. "So the next task is to see how we bounce back after a loss."
He'll get that chance when Wadena-Deer Creek plays at Verndale on Tuesday, December 1.
