The fall workout schedule has begun for the Staples-Motley Cross Country teams.

The Cardinals' boy's team will be young, but experienced. A squad that head coach Bruce Fuhrman says desires to have its strongest showing in recent years.

“I am excited to be able to coach this young team, Fuhrman stated. "The excellent leadership from our team captains has started us off in a very positive way and it will be an exciting to watch the team become competitive as the season progresses.”

The Cardinals will open their regular season at Blueberry Golf Course just north of Menahga on Monday, August 29 at the annual River Run Invitational.

This meet is now shared in a cooperative agreement between the United North Central and Staples-Motley cross country programs.

According to Fuhrman, the Staples-Motley meet is one of the “oldest” running cross country events in the state of Minnesota at 51 years.

The boy’s team will be led by captains Blake Gerard (12), Coleman Klimek (12) and Nicholas Tabatt (11).

“Overall, our team will be considered young”, says coach Fuhrman.

The Cardinals' varsity group to start the season will also have seven sophomore’s (Braydon Christianson, Trenton Plopper, Finn Erholtz, Spencer Miller, Jack Benson, Bentley Christianson, Ben Bartczak), as well as freshmen Jack Tyrrell, Hunter Klimek, Isaac Christoffersen and Cael Sams.

The Cards will also have two outstanding eighth-grade runners in Emmet Anderson and Tanner Robben, who will compete for the top spots on this team.

The Mid-State Conference is going to be tough again this year.

“Detroit Lakes and Pequot Lakes will be strong contenders for the title”, forecasts Fuhrman. “Crosby-Ironton is young, but tough also.”

“The Section 6A team favorite would have to be West Central Area," Fuhrman added. "They could have a host of great athletes returning."

The Cardinals' girl's CC program this fall will be led by senior captains Taylor Yungbauer, Alex Miller and Mikayla Sauber).

Other varsity runner include: Emma Colsen (11), Julia Trantina (11) Jorie Ihme (10) Kaitlyn Smith (9), Kira Sweeney (8), Abby Brown (8), Madysen Hull (7), Ameara Chenoweth (7), Addison Lorber (7) and Mackenzie Wilds (7).

“This is a hard working group of girls and who have a desire to be strong," commented Fuhrman. "There are many new faces and I admire how they compete in practice. This could be the team to follow this season.”

“Pequot Lakes and Park Rapids could be the conference favorites this year as each returns a powerful lineup,” predicts Fuhrman.

“The Section 6A team favorite would have to be Morris Area as they could have a host of great athletes returning.”

The Cardinals' girls will also open their regular season at the River Run Invitational on August 29 in Menahga.
