A Triple Play
Since it is Sunday evening, and I am shunning the NFL, I am not watching the Vikings-Bears game.

I did see some more great state tournament football on Friday. Prep Bowl 20 at the Metrodome gave high school football fans something to remember.

And for three area football teams, coaches and fans...some great memories.

First in Nine-Man, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy controlled this game almost from the beginning and cruised to an easy win over Ada-Borup. For the Comets it was their first ever state title.

In AAAA, Detroit Lakes played to the end and used a game- ending field goal to get the win over Mankato East.

The third team from our area failed to win a state title. But it was not for lack of effort. The Pillager Huskies and the Falcons of McLeod West treated the early morning croud the the Dome to a great back and forth Class A title game. The Huskies gave up the ball with under two minutes to play, which brought to an end a great run by Pillager!

I enjoyed watching the Huskies. The way they ran the wish-bone...the way they came to the ball on defense...they played hard on every down.

Most in the press box last Friday thought McLeod West and their high-powered running back Tyler Evans would be too much for Pillager. But other than one long run, Evans was held in check.

What no one else counted on was the heart and desire of this team from Pillager. And they never quit.

This fall I wrote that I didn't expect any one football team from the area to dominate. Pillager, Hillcrest and Detroit Lakes didn't dominate, but they gave us a great run at the end of the season. And they all have some great players coming back for next season!

Hopefully there are some teams waiting to give us those kinds of thrills again in March.

From the Pie Hole: The Golden Gophers close out their football campaign with the Axe from Wisconsin.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving to all visitors to Sportscow.com.

I enjoy this little weekly diddy and Kyle is easy to work with.

I enjoy the contacts some of you make with me.

But this week I want you to enjoy some time with your friends and family. I'll talk with you next week.

From the Piehole: The Vikings just won't let go. Good luck to the Pillager Huskies and the Lakers from Detroit Lakes as they shoot for state football titles this week.

Remember: Worry is a rocking chair that gives you something to do, but never gets you anywhere.

To Twin Or Not To Twin
What in the world are we to think about the Minnesota Twins and their threatened contraction?

Is Major League Baseball so messed up that they cannot even figure out which teams should be dropped? A poll this week showed the Twins as the 10th most attractive team overall for 2002!

Oh Mr. Selig... Milwaukee was ranked 28th.

I like professional baseball. Not so much to view night after night in my living room, I like it to see live two or three times a year. Although if I were closer to the Twin Cities I would catch many more games.

And I just like Twins baseball in the background as I work in the summer. I grew up with the Twins, I fell asleep to the Twins and I still do.

Because I grew up with the Twins and I like them, should I put up a big fight to save them...to keep them in Minnesota. No! It would be a huge loss to have the team go away, but my life would change very little.

I doubt the contraction thing will fly, especially if the players union gets involved. The last five times the players union has stood up to the owners, the owners have caved...every time!

The only point that might make this thing fly...Carl Pohlad is willing to take the money. That might be the opening baseball is looking for.

I would miss the Twins. I hope they stay. I think they will.

Next up: How to build a stadium that the Gophers, Vikings and Twins all like...and nobody has to pay for.

From the Pie Hole: The Fosston volleyball team looked great at last week's state tournament. Look for their girls' basketball team to be very tough.

The Vikings...oooooh, the Vikings.

Pillager and Osakis should be a fun semi-final football game this week!

Remember: If you can't be a good example, you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

Goin Deer Huntin
Is it only deer hunting if you are actually hunting deer? Or is it only deer hunting if you are killing the great whitetail? And if I see at least seven deer a day for a month...where do they go at deer hunting?

Can you tell yet what kind of a hunt the Skogens enjoyed this past weekend?!

We generally only hunt two days. We generally get at least one deer. The weather was nice, but nothing else worked out. Hundreds of deer in the area all took a powder during the big game (hunt)!

Day One: Up early...nice weather...boys and I ready to get this done early.

We saw no-deer...nothing...nada...zilch...on day one. We went to sleep wondering where are they?

Day Two: The boys see a couple...no chance to shoot. Dad misses a small doe. One boy quits early and we get skunked for the first time in the nine years we have owned this farm. Skunked in the heart of deer country. Skunked while our neighbors were shooting not only nice deer, but possibly wall mounters.

Skunked....Skunked....Skunked!

Only 363 days till deer hunting.

Oh, I did see a wonderful sunrise on Saturday and two spectacular sunsets, especially on Saturday night...WOW!

And I spent two days with the boys...It was a great weekend!

From the Pie Hole: Good luck to Pillager at Grand Marias and to Bertha-Hewitt, Underwood and Alexandria in this weeks' state tournaments.

How about those Diamondbacks?!

Remember: Be yourself--everyone else is taken.
