Its The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year...
This for me is the best of the high school sports season. Having played basketball as a youngster I certainly enjoy the game of basketball more than any other high school events. Thats why I love the next four weeks.

Already Danceline, Gymnastics, Girls Hockey are done. State wrestling is happening this week and then Boys Hockey, Girls and Boys basketball.

It's back to great memories of packed gyms of screaming faithfull...trying to wish their teams to the next round. We have certainly been treated to some great events in all sports this winter and the best is yet to come.

So many things come into play...the health of a team, experience, the bracketing, the site of the events...they all play a factor in a great six week run from the middle of February to the end of March. It's alot of late nights and long days for teams, fans, coaches, refs, and local sports broadcasters but it is a great time. Remember to get an support your favorite teams....then after they are eliminated, head for a regional gym and check out some more championship action.

And remember the "COW" will have your brackets, scores and high-lites so check it out everyday.

Thought for the week: A good scare is worth more to a man than good advice.

Random Thoughts
What a weekend! Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale and Wadena-Deer Creek advance to the team state wrestling tournament...Kristi Wood advances to the state gymnastics meet...and a number of individuals come from the 8A wrestling tournament and head for state.

On the other hand, the Timberwolves, after getting us excited over an 11 game winning streak are struggling again. The Wild are still playing well and the Twins have opened spring training.

I like the Twins chances to be in the wild card hunt this year. The pitching seems sound and the defense will be fine, but they could still use the long ball threat.

And although I don't spend much time watching it, racing was delt a huge blow Sunday when Dale Earnhardt was killed on the final turn of the final lap at Daytona. The icon of motorsports, Earnhardt was a seven-time Winston Cup Champion.

We move to an exciting part of the sports season as the winter schedule moves to regional and state tournaments...and of course one of my favorites, the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament! What a great show they put on every year.

By the way, my picks for Mid-State girls' and boys' basketball champions came to pass over the weekend. Congratulations to the Staples-Motley "Cardinals" (boys) and Wadena-Deer Creek "Wolverines" (girls).

That's it this week...I had frozen water pipes over the weekend and will be out of town a few days this week, so I have to run.

Remember: Any game you play, you have to lose sometime.

Virtual Football
I was somewhat prepared to accept the new pro football league XFL as a league of their own. I expected former NFL players, along with those who the NFL had over-looked, to be trying to work their way back to the American Dream. Hold the phone! I may end up back in the basement. If you don't understand that last comment, please refer to my presidential election column.

I watched about a half of one XFL game the first weekend. I got to see a math teacher throw to a guy who seemed confused about pass routes, but it didn't really matter because the reciever dropped the passes anyway.

The Governor held his toungue and the cheerleaders kept just enough of their clothes on. The hitting was hard and the players seemed to play harder, knowing NFL scouts were in the stands. Nice TV audience, sponsors, full stadiums...Hey this thing might make it!

Sunday of the first weekend and the entire second weekend, I never went back to see what was happening. I think by February I don't need pro football anymore.

Here comes the NCAA tournament and of course the High School stuff. But now the XFL has clinched it for me. Not the Governor, not the players, not the clothed cheerleaders. The rules makers. Just when I felt this could be "REAL," they decide to use a running clock in the fourth quarter of Saturday games so they can get to Saturday Night Live on time!

Can you see the NFL adopting this one?! Vikings down by six with four minutes to go, but wait 60-Minutes starts in 15 minutes so let's just let the clock run, the Vikings get five plays off and the game ends on the 10 yard line.

They also plan to shorten the half-time and post games to move things along.

Vince McMahon, we have pulled the curtain away from the great oz of the XFL and you helped us do it by caving to the first pressures that came along. Take your Hitmen, Maniax, Outlaws and others back to a ring...we always knew those were fake!

Remember: Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.

Survivor
I have had quite a week. A girls' hockey game in Moorhead...an incident with a State Trooper...three oil changes...about four meetings at work...I peck away, while in the backgroud we jump back and forth from "Survivor" to college basketball on the TV. Survivor?! Hey let's do that this week...

First, nice job to Chad Swanson and Jason Murray, the head and assistant coaches for the Wadena Deer Creek girls hockey program. The Wolverines were eliminated from the Section 8 hockey tournament Tuesday by the Moorhead "Spuds" 7-0.

Coach Swanson continues to battle the numbers problem. This year I saw good work ethics, improved skill levels but just not enough numbers....and really not enough coming in the near future. The Wolverines were able to win 12 games this year, but just could not match up with many teams. Moorhead brought three full lines and a 5- person rotation on defense and the Wolverines ran out of gas late in each period. Next year with the addition of a two-class system, WDC girls' hockey will have a better tourney matchup...but it will take numbers to survive.

Here comes the big push to get a fire department escort out of town, its "TOURNAMENT TIME"!! In this area it looks good to put three quality wrestling teams into the state with Wadena-Deer Creek, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale and Frazee all looking very strong. Plus scores of individuals from this area will survive the sections.

Girls' and Boys' basketball in the area still to close to call. A lot of great individuals, decent teams...who's healthy, who gets focused, who plays the best for the next month?

Hey, don't forget the Wadena Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association is now taking requests for young people to attend summer camp at Deep Portage Conservation Reserve. For information call John Edinger at 631-1568.

Have a great week. Slow down those snowmobiles. Make plans to support a sports event in your area.

Remember: Wouldn't it be nice if one week of vacation seemed to last as long as one week on a diet?
