The Heat Is On
December and January are just around the corner! No really, it won't be that long before we are shoveling and shivering. I do not look forward to that. But this heat (or is it the humidity?) is getting me a little down.

As I age, I like summer better than winter. But we have really had a long hot and humide stretch. Don't worry, unlike the mindless people penned up in the heat in the Twin Cities, I have not loaded my guns and gone on any kind of running, gunning rampage. However enough of the heat!

I got some relief this week with just over an inch of rain, but without air in the house...we are pretty steamy these days.

Does this have anything to do with the world of local sports? No, not a thing...and that's the beauty of this job. It doesn't even have to make sense!

In sports, the Twins sign Joe Mauer. The baseball playoffs are running along. Thank you to Carl Kiser of the Lake and Pine league and John Dermody for helping me with scores this summer.

One of the SportsCow sponsors, KWAD/KNSPwill again be broadcasting the Region 14C and 16C baseball tournament.

Also, beginning August 4th, KWAD-KNSP will air the Saturday Morning Sports Talk program with Patrick Reusse and Joe Soucheray. This duo will cover regional sports, some high school stuff and certainly, at times, will get off track. It will air from 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Saturdays.

Oh by the way...there was not enough of a response on the survey to draw any concrete conclusions...except some of you think the Vikings will be worse and you all talk or yell at your TV during a sporting event.

Time to go back to the water bottle. It's hot and humid and I need to go upstairs and load the guns.

Remember: Rule #1 of a civilized society...let people be different.

A Night At The Dome
I had a great opportunity last Saturday night to help the Minnesota Twins radio broadcast team with their pregame show.

I had the chance to talk about baseball in our part of Minnesota, to talk about he major leagues RBI program for inter-city youth baseball programs and do the starting lineups for the Twins vs. Cincinatti.

It was fun to work with professional broadcaster John Gordon--the long time second to 40-year broadcaster Herb Carneal. It was also a bit of a rush, as some of the technical parts of the broadcast were not in place. So we had to move from outside the dome on the plaza...to down on the field behind homeplate. Then as we were wrapping up a segment on the All Star game, John Gordon asked me to run up to the press box and do the starting line ups after the commercial break.

It was hot and muggy....there were a lot of steps...the sweat was dripping from the chin...but we got through it.

All in all it was fun. I got to talk about the nicknames of the teams in the Lake and Pine League and share a little Dick Stigman on the Twins story...plus, the Twins beat the Reds that night 7-6 as the Dome went over one-million fans.

It was the perfect trip to the big city as I was honked at and flipped off on the way out of town.

I sat next to a guy from New York who was in Minneapolis on business, but had never been to the dome. He was not impressed with the building, but was amazed at how Minnesota fans watched the game and seemed to know what was going on. Not the case in New York. The Twins are so fun right now...tough pitchers, timely hitters, great team speed, tough defense, and a never quit attitude. A five game lead at mid season will be hard for anyone else to overtake. It should be a fun finish for baseball fans.

Have a cool week.

Remember: Almost anyone can stand adversity. To test a persons character, give that person power.

It Must Be Summer
It must be summer. The county fairs are springing up all around us, as are the area fishing and golf events. Some of these are fund raisers, some are tournaments, some are just for fun.

The Wadena Golf Club reminds duffers that their 4-person scramble will be held Sunday, July 15th. This will be a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. Entry fee is just $40 for non members and $30 for members. (You must have a current 2001 HDCP card.)

Also, the annual Duffers Delite will be played on Wednesday, July 25th. This all day event always attracts a full course. The $50 fee gets you two meals, five beverage tickets and chances for prizes on all 18 holes.

Space is limited in both of these events, so call 218-631-7718 to make your reservations.

Meanwhile I received mail last week wondering why I didn't spend more time on Legion or VFW baseball in the summer. Easy...lack of information. This is a one man local sports department (at KWAD/KNSP/K106) and I rely on the gifts of coaches, players, parents and others to get me information that I can use. I have little time for chasing.

Speaking of that...Lake and Pine baseball has started their playoffs. The Countryside, Resorters and Hi-10 leagues' playoffs right around the corner.

Hey, it's summer...enjoy!

Remember: when you get to the end of your rope...tie a knot in it and hang on.
