No Guts At The Capitol
Well, the State Legislature certainly sent a loud and clear message to the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings. IT'S AN ELECTION YEAR AND WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!
Could they have come up with something less substantial? I don't think so. You see it's an election year and rather than take a stand, the State Legislature dinked around until the last two days, passed a budget balancing bill and some kind of a stadium thing that requires too many parties to come to the table thinking, "Yeah...this is a good idea." (Carl) Pohlad will not jump on this deal and it completely ignored the Vikings and the Gophers.
I said over a year ago that the Vikings would be leaving, now it's just a matter of time. It wouldn't have to happen, but the spineless legislature would not just say, "Hey, this state is building a stadium and here's how we will do it." Or "Minneapolis or St. Paul is building a stadium and here's how we plan to help them."
It will not be the end of the world when the Twins and Vikings leave, but almost immediately we will see a faction come forward to try and bring another club to Minnesota...and like the Wild they will be over priced and need a stadium anyway.
The blame is on the Legislature. They could of made a good stadium bill, one that built the building...one that told the nation we plan on having pro-sports in Minnesota!
Of course they could have passed real budget-balancing legislation, that wasn't more skewed than the Anderson-Enron thing! But they didn't. You see it's an election year and we are scared!

This, That And Some Other Things
Well, it looks like I need to stop writing about things that are time sensitive. That way when I don't get the next article in on time, it's not so noticeable. Anyway, most of the fisherman I talked with got little or nothing on the opener. There were scattered reports of some fish, but for the most part, nothing too great.
Pam Turner gets a chance to talk with the University of Minnesota about the womens' basketball program. Turner has been at Denver and led the Pioneers to the NCAA tourny this past year for the first time ever.
I think it is time for the U to make a decision so the recruits can settle in. No sense ruining a great start from last year.
Thanks to the judge who will be asking Clem Haskins to give back over $800,000 of the $1.5-million he took from the University of Minnesota. I never did understand why the U would pay a guy that kind of money who had just violated every trust that is developed between an employer and an employee. Can't you just fire someone anymore?!
The Twins could use a break. The injuries continue to challenge Ron Gardenhire's ability to manage. Starting pitching still has not come along, and as a result the Twins "B" team is constantly trying to come from behind. I still like this team to contend for the division crown.

Mom and Fishing
As you already know, two huge events hit Minnesota this weekend. It's Mother's Day and...it's the fishing opener! Oh, oh...who wins this one?
Mom, who birthed you? Or some walleye or northern that could not care less?!
Editor's note: Kyle wonders...is birthed even a word?
For you hard core fishermen, have a good weekend. But hey, it's alright to remember mom too! Maybe ask mom if she wants to come along on Sunday. You get all day Saturday to yourself and your buddies, then take her fishing Sunday. If she is not interested, at least remember her.
As you get ready to fish the opener, remember the three most commonly forgotten items: current boat registration, current Minnesota fishing license, and the boat plug!
I have fished just one opener and I will never go back...too crowded, too cold, too few fish!
I think I'll hang out with the mother of my children and if the moment moves me, I'll buy some fish somewhere.
Thanks Mom for everything and have a great day! And good luck to all those heading for the lake this weekend!
From the Piehole: Love those Twins at home! High school playoffs just around the corner!
Remember: Be like a postage stamp. Stick to one thing until you get there.
