|New Year...Changes...Something Is Missing|
|As 2006 broke, I was sleeping a basement in Thief River Falls. It was my wife's family Christmas celebration. We had opened gifts, watched sports, eaten and I was settling in for a long winter's sleep. Something just didn't feel right.|
Is it any wonder?
For the first December in 24 years, I had not done any play-by-play of high school sports. I now know I will miss the entire winter, spring, and upcoming fall sports seasons.
No road trips at 30 degrees below zero. No getting home at 1 a.m. just to get up again at 3:30 a.m. and head for work. No coaches, no student athletes, no parents.
I suddenly realize I am out of my element! Even though I did a number of things for the radio stations based out of Wadena...my thing was sports.
Nothing like calling a close hard fought game. Being there when history is made, in great triumph, and huge disappointment. I have had the privilege of being there for all of it. And really there is nothing like it.
I love it and four short weeks after it ended, I miss it...very much!
I had to take myself out of the picture. I have chosen another path in life, and although the jury is still out on whether or not it was the right choice. It felt right.
I still work in an outstanding company with great people...I just work on the other side of the microphone. Now I'm seeing accounts and selling advertising, while I wait to see if my friends and neighbors will trust me enough to send me to St. Paul as their next State Senator.
Change is hard. Change is scary at times...and I am making a huge change. But is also a change for my co-workers, my radio friends and all the student-athletes and coaches that I have such respect for.
I fully expect to be back in November. Win or lose. Full time or part-time.
Meanwhile, I'll just be a face in the crowd watching Central Minnesota's best individuals, teams, and coaches work their magic.
I will be fine in 2006. What will happen in 2007? One can only hope!
But either way, I know I will be doing what needs doing...and that's just the way I live life...getting stuff done!
Good Luck Teams! I will see you down the road!
Dan Skogen is Sports Director for KWAD/KNSP/KKWS in Wadena. He has chosen to run for political office in 2006. Because the radio stations must abide by issues reagarding "equal time" for all candidates, Dan cannot be on the air, which includes doing play-by-play of local sports.
