Juniors Kayla Wangen and Brian Craig will represent Pequot Lakes this year in the ExCel program, sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League.
According to Pequot Lakes activities director Marc Helmrichs, ExCEL - Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership - is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens.
This is the 13th year that the Minnesota State High School League has sponsored the ExCEL Award. Nominees must be a junior in high school, making satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participate in a MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity, hold a leadership position in school
and work voluntarily in their community.
Kayla Wangen is a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball. She is a letterwinner in all three sports and received team MVP honors in softball last spring as a sophomore. Wangen has been on the "A" honor roll since 9th grade and currently is serving on the Prom Committee. When not involved with school activities, she volunteers in a variety of youth sports programs as a coach and official. Kayla is the daughter of Sherry Wangen of Pequot Lakes.
Brian Craig is a member of the basketball team. He has been on the "A" honor roll since 9th grade. When he is not involved with basketball, Brian spends time volunteering with several church related activities and assisting with various youth sports programs as a coach and official. Brian is the son of Tom and Janet Craig of Pequot Lakes.
Statewide winners will be announced during the MSHSL winter tournaments in late February or Early March.
