Rachel Craig, a freshman from Wadena, has been selected as the 2011-12 Female Newcomer of the Year at Bemidji State University.
The announcement came as a part of the BSU Student-Athlete Appreciation Banquet on Thursday, April 26 at Sanford Center in Bemidji.
Craig, had an immediate impact on the BSU volleyball team, starting each of the Beaver's 28 matches in 2011. She led the team with hitting a percentage of .231 (175k-72a-445ta) and in blocking with 15bs-41ba=56 (0.58 bpg). Rachel also finished fourth on the team with 175 kills (1.82kpg), plus added 30 digs (0.31dpg) and 12 assists (0.12apg).
And according to a BSU press release, she "was a consistent focus of opposing teamís game planning."
Craig also performed in the classroom. Among her academic accomplishments, she had a 4.0 GPA in business administration and was named to the Presidentís List, the BSUís Deanís List and the BSU Athletics 3.0 Club.
Menís basketball standout Dermaine Crockrell, a junior from Mesa, Arizona was selected as BSUís 2011-12 Male Newcomer of the Year.
In addition, Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia) and James Ellisor (Sr., Glendale, Ariz.) were named as the 2011-12 Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year.
