Two Coaches Make Milestones
Two coaches in two different sports both recorded the 700th victories of their careers on Saturday.

Ken Novak Jr., the longtime head coach of the Hopkins boys' basketball team, got win #700 when his Royals defeated St. Paul Central 82-66 Saturday night.

Novak joined Bob McDonald of Chisholm (984), Bob Brink of Rocori (936) and Ziggy Kauls of Mounds View (739) in the 700 club.

Wabasso/Red Rock Central wrestling coach Gary Hindt recorded his 700th career victory on Saturday with a 56-6 win over Luverne at the Luverne Duals.

Hindt, who has been coaching for 45 years, is third on the Minnesota coaching wins list and has more victories than any other active wrestling coach.  Hindt is now 701-192-6.

Scot Davis, who coached 34 years at Owatonna, Hutchinson, Bird Island-Lake Lillian and Belcourt (ND) before retiring in 2011, had a career record of 984-149-4.  Bill Sutter, the Goodhue coach for 39 seasons accumulated a record of 760-181-8 before retiring in 2008.

Jamestown Adds Three Golfers With Staples-Motley Ties
Jamestown College head men’s and women’s golf coach Dustin Jensen announces the signing of several golfers who will begin competing for the Jimmies in the fall of 2013.

Brothers Mitchell and Trenton Hagenson will graduate this spring from Staples-Motley High School where both are two-time state golf participants and All-Conference selections. Their parents are David and Jody Hagenson.

Another Staples-Motley product, Michael Strain, has transferred to Jamestown College from Concordia University – St. Paul. He is a six-year letterwinner and three-time state golf participant. He is the son of Don Strain and Sharon Stone.

The Jimmies also announced the signing of  Justin Goldsberry from Centennial, Colorado and Emily Larson of Anoka, Minn.

“The Jimmie golf family is proud and excited to welcome Emily, Justin, Michael, Mitch and Trent,” Jensen says. “They all exemplify the core values of what it means to be a Jimmie student-athlete; they are hardworking and dedicated, both inside and outside of the classroom. When it comes to golf, they are the epitome of what we are looking for because they love the game for its inherent values of honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.”

Coborn Named Hockey Athlete Of The Week
Tucker Coborn will always remember his first collegiate goal.

Coborn, a 6'0" freshman at Concordia College in Moorhead, scored at the 1:42 mark in overtime to help the Cobbers upset No.3-ranked UW-Eau Claire 2-1 Saturday.

"Tucker's been a little snake bit but he has been getting chances," said Cobber head coach Chris Howe. "I just keep telling him that you worry if you don't get chances. You know you are going to score if you get chances. He has had plenty of chances and boy was it fun for him to get that one tonight."

The victory not only helped Concordia pull off the tremendous upset, but it also marked the team's first win over an NCHA foe since 2008-09. For his heroics, Coborn was named the MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete-of-the-Week.

Coborn also had a good night Friday, tallying an assist with two shots and a plus/minus of plus-1 in a 5-3 nonconference loss at UW-River Falls, but it turns out he was saving his best for Saturday night. After UWEC scored a third-period goal to tied the game at 1-1 and force overtime, Coborn got his game-winner just 1:42 into the extra period as Concordia handed the Blugolds just their third loss of the season.

Coborn has appeared in all 15 games, and now has six assists and one goal in his first season with the Cobbers for a total of seven points, which ranks sixth on the team. His six assists are tied for 14th in the MIAC, just three behind the league leaders (nine).

Saturday's win helped Concordia inch closer to .500 with a 6-8-1 overall record. The Cobbers are 3-3 in MIAC play, and their six points have them tied for fourth in the conference standings, right in the thick of the Playoff race. Coborn and his teammates hope the momentum from Saturday's big win carries over as they return to conference play with a two-game series at Augsburg. Friday's game starts at 7:05 p.m., with Saturday's face off scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

MSHSL Hall of Fame Nomination Deadline Extended
The nomination deadline for the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame has been extended to Friday, January 18, 2013.

The MSHSL strongly encourages you to nominate a person(s) from your community for this most prestigious honor.

Established in 1991 and housed at the League office, members of the Hall of Fame are selected through a multi-level process that includes the League's member schools and a committee of athletic, fine arts, and educational leaders. Nominations are solicited in nine categories: athlete, coach, official, administrator, fine arts participant/director/adjudicator, activity/athletic director, and contributor (someone who has made outstanding contributions to high school activities in some capacity other than those previously mentioned including such areas as sports medicine and sports media).

All candidates for the Hall of Fame must be at least 35-years of age. They may be retired from their field or still active.

The induction ceremony will be held Sunday, May 19, 2013.  The 2013 inductees will be the 20th group to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

A listing of the 186 Hall of Fame inductees is on the League's Web site, "Recognition" tab.  Nomination forms and instructions are also posted on the site.

If you have any questions about the Hall of Fame program, please contact Lisa Lissimore at 763-560-2262.
