Wadena-Deer Creek High School Activity Director Norm Gallant has been honored as the Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s (MnIAA) “Sub-Section 24 Athletic Director of the Year.”
Gallant received the prestigious award March 25 while attending the MnIAAA regional meeting in St. Cloud. Gallant was nominated by his peers at the Region 6A meeting and was recognized at the MnIAA convention in St. Cloud.
“It was nice to be recognized by my peers,” said Gallant. “The other activity directors have been great to work with. I’ve learned a lot from them and really enjoy working with them.”
Gallant is quick to credit his activities assistant, Mary Fix, for helping him run the Student Activities Department at WDC High School. She’s been with WDC since 1984 and brings a wealth experience to the department, Gallant said.
“This is a nice award that reflects on our whole department. I can’t give enough credit to Mary. She is the best person I could ask for to work with. She is great at what she does. She has been awesome for a long time in this role,” Gallant said.
Gallant is in his fourth year as Wadena-Deer Creek’s activities director after replacing Brian Silbernick, who accepted a principal position at Holdingford Schools. Gallant officially took over on June 15, 2010. Two days later, an EF4 tornado ripped through the WDC High School campus. Gallant worked tirelessly that summer to ensure fall sports started on time. Then, that fall, Gallant, along with the rest of the school and the community, celebrated the sweet success of the volleyball team winning a state title. Over the next two years, high school sports played their games in the renovated elementary gymnasium while the new high school was built.
Since the new middle/high school opened the fall of 2012, Gallant has helped host two section wrestling tournaments, as well as a slew of sub-section and section volleyball, basketball and baseball tournament games.
Gallant currently serves as the head wrestling coach, a position he’s held for the past nine years. Before accepting the A.D. position, he was an elementary teacher for 11 years at WDC Elementary. He also coached football from 1998 to 2010, as well as baseball during the 2001-02 seasons at WDC.
WDC Superintendent Lee Westrum believes Gallant understands that a well-rounded education includes extracurricular activities as well as academic coursework.
“Norm Gallant is very deserving of the Sub-Section A.D. of the Year Award and though I have only worked with Norm for a year, it is easy to tell that he cares deeply about the student-athletes at Wadena-Deer Creek.”
